Ich bin froh, daß ich das Mädel habe gehen lassen und keinen Fremden am Tisch habe denn es ist eben alles zu teuer. Dazu sind die Mädel doch alle, fast alle, schlecht. Auch die letzte hat mich, nachdem ich ihr auf ihre unverschämte Erwiderung hin, gekündigt, ordentlich schlecht gemacht. Ich mags im Brief gar nicht schreiben. Mit dem Briefboten, ein ganz junger Mensch noch, welcher mit sämtlichen Dienstmädchen schläft, muß sie über uns

I am glad that I let the maid go and that I don't have a stranger at my table, for everything is too expensive now. In addition to which, all the maids – almost all – are no good. The last one, too, has really talked me down since I let her go because of her brazen talking back. I almost don't want to write it in the letter. She must have talked about us with the letter carrier, a very young man who sleeps with all the servant girls,
